If you are Jamaican, you are sure to have visited Puerto Seco, at least once. It’s by far one of the most popular beaches along the north coast and one of the best ways to enjoy our culture. The beach is in the community of Discovery Bay, so named because it was once thought that this was where Columbus first landed in Jamaica. Of course, (like most things related to his historic trip) this has been proven wrong.
Family Fun
Disappointed he found no fresh water when he docked; Christopher Columbus called the area Puerto Seco or ‘dry port’. But, enough of the history lessons! The beach is one of the most developed and requires an entry fee of JA$350 or US$5 per adult. It’s perfect for a family fun day as it boasts a small jetty, swings, waterslides and a playground with rides for children.
The water is perfectly azure complemented by pristine white sand. The best part is that to the right of the beach which is separated by a port, the water is shallow for about 15 - 20 feet out to sea and is ideal for frolicking even if you’re not a swimmer. It’s also a great beach to get your snorkeling on! Although, I recommend taking your own gears rather than renting (it can be a tad bit expensive). Oh yes, and this beach has professional life guards on duty throughout the day so it’s also very safe.
You haven’t experienced Jamaica until you are pestered by a few vendors so take it in good spirit and grab a beach ball or some other keepsake item that is sure to be on sale on one of the many colourful stalls.
Jamaican Food!
I can never sing too highly the praises of Jamaican food so jerk chicken and festivals, patties, fried fish and bammies and a cold Red Stripe beer are just a few of the great combinations you must try! There is a restaurant and bar on the beach but I guarantee many other options as concession stands are all over the place.
To ensure that your trip is truly an historic event, round it off with a visit to the nearby Columbus Park to see relics of our colonial past.
